Avtek has been named Skills Development Scotland’s Youth Employer of the Month. Commercial glazing company Avtek Solutions was singled out for its commitment to nurturing young talent and providing training opportunities.

Based at Ridgeway Industrial Estate, the business has taken on seven modern apprentices. Skills Development Scotland Chairman John F McClelland said: “The way this young company has embraced modern apprenticeships as part of its growth strategy is to be commended. I also welcome the fact it’s apprenticeships bridge youth and adult employment and how Avtek Solutions sees the value investment in training can bring to the business.”

Operations director Mark Lawrie said: “We opted to grow our own talent but also felt it was very important to offer young people in the community an opportunity to join the company, get qualified and learn new skills.

“It’s great to receive the Skills Development Scotland award and have our approach and commitment recognised in this way”.

Since being set up just two years ago with two employees, Avtek Solutions now has a 27-strong workforce.

The company has six manufacturing, fabrication and installation apprentices, a business and administration apprentice and plans to recruit another apprentice shortly.

It was nominated by Skills Development Scotland employer engagement adviser June Gallagher. She said: “I have been working with the company since its earliest days and have seen its fantastic commitment to young people and training.”
